Join the 2007-2008 Junior League of Portland's New Member Class for a morning of volunteering on May 10th from 9AM - Noon as we 'Spring into Action' at the Mission Possible Teen Center in Westbrook. This 'Done in a Day' project will focus on cleaning, organizing, and decorating the Center. In addition, we will be inviting the teens from Mission Possible to participate as volunteers as well. 85-85-85 Annual Appeal Campaign

What better way to support the organization you love, than with a contribution to the Junior League of Portland's Annual Appeal. Gifts of all sizes are greatly appreciated!

In September, the Junior League of Portland celebrated the 85th anniversary of its founding. This was an exciting and special way to officially kick-off our year and was only made possible because hundreds of women have been a part of this wonderful organization throughout the past eight and a half decades.

Think of how different the landscape of Greater Portland would be without the Junior League. The projects our members have founded or helped to develop over the years have been life-altering. To name a few: The Children's Theater of Maine, the Children's Museum of Maine, Center for Grieving Children, Kids in Safe Seats Initiative, Beacon Teen Center, Kids First Center, and our most recent Signature Project in collaboration with 3Community Counseling Center, the Trauma Intervention Program.

What is the 85-85-85 CAMPAIGN?

It is a campaign designed with a simple goal in mind: 85 Junior League Members will contribute $85 (or more) in celebration of our 85 years of service to the community.

As a special thank you, if you join in the 85-85-85 CAMPAIGN, you will be invited to a celebratory luncheon on April 11, 2008 at Maine Medical Center3 Research Institute in Scarborough. Guest speaker will bee Debbie Smith, a member of the Association of Junior Leagues international's board of directors. We are honored to have Debbie and AJLI support and help celebrate out 85th anniversary and our special 85-85-85 CAMPAIGN. The luncheon has been donated to the Junior League, so 100 percent of your contribution will support the mission of the JLP!

The event will be held at Foreplay (436 Fore St., Portland) from 4 to 7 p.m. In addition to offering a signature cocktail (served in a JLP martini glass!), the "Junior-tini," we will be raffling off Celtic tickets, jewelry, coolers and other fantastic prizes. Raffle tickets are $5 each, and proceeds from the sales of all raffle tickets and Junior-tinis will support the New Member cleaning and improvement project to Mission Possible Teen Center. Mark your calendars for the April 26th Done-in-a-Day that kicks off with a grand rally at Payson Park from 9-10 and features a press conference, the announcement of our new focus area, and plenty of coffee and goodies to get you jumpstarted! Then, head out on the town to participate in one of the following projects:

- Barbara Bush Children's Hospital: Bake and decorate cookies with patients
- Maine Audubon Society: Project TBD
- Kids First Center: Create goodies/snack bags for participants
- City of Portland/Back Cove: Trash collection/clean-up

Another super JLP PR opportunity has just presented itself! Volunteers needed this Wednesday, March 26 from 2-5 in Monument Square.

Pierce Promotions will be handing out samples of hot Tazo Tea (and tea bags). The City of Portland places a stipulation on these types of promotions. In order for Pierce to use Monument Square, they must include a community nonprofit. The nonprofit is given the opportunity to distribute, in our case, JLP literature and set up an exhibit table. For participating, JLP would receive a donation. The donation would most likely be from $100 to $500. We would not promote or distribute Tazo Tea products (Pierce employees would), but we would house our JLP exhibit under their tent.

You have an opportunity to influence the direction of the Junior League of Portland. We are about to make a decision that will shape our future signature project and community programs. How? With the Focus Area vote at the General Membership Meeting on March 27th. By popular vote, we will decide between three emerging issues and adopt one as our new Focus Area. The three choices are:

Money Management
Food Insecurity and Hunger,
Self Esteem for Young Women.

All areas are loaded with volunteer opportunities and present multiple unmet needs in our communities.

Can’t attend the March GMM? You can still participate in this important vote! Don’t miss your opportunity to help set the course for the future of the JLP. How?! Vote by Absentee Ballot! Here’s how:

Cast your votes on the printed ballot.
Fold your completed ballot and place it in a SEALED envelope marked “Absentee Ballot.”
Place the sealed envelope in another envelope and mail (via USPS) to: Kristina Jenkins, Corresponding Secretary, 21 Plimoth Way, Yarmouth, ME 04096.

JLP is recipient of the Kids First Center Libby McLeod Award to be presented on May 29 at 6 at the Woodlands Club in Falmouth.

Cocktails, auction, dancing, great food and good times!

Featuring the Tony Boffa Band

This year's event will be very special as we recognize the Junior League of Portland

for their major role in creating and sustaining Kids First. They will be presented the

Libby McLeod Award for exceptional support to the Center's mission.

Preble Street Resource Center Breakfast Help, March 8

Start at least one person's day off with a smile by participating in our upcoming volunteer event with Preble Street, and give your own day a feel-good jump! We are looking for help with a breakfast event on March 8th. Volunteers are needed to bake blueberry muffins, which can be dropped off the day before. Volunteers are also needed to help in the kitchen for the breakfast run (8 a.m. - 10 a.m.). The location is 252 Oxford Street, Portland.

Kids in the Kitchen Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer opportunities working with the second grade class at Pride's Corner Elementary. The curriculum is set and we are looking for our fabulous JLP volunteers to help communicate how to make Healthy Choices In a fun and active classroom setting (with Teacher's).

We have opportunities for you
March 4, 6, 11 & 13
From 1:00-2:00 pm (we need 12 volunteers per day)

*If you are not available to help out in the classroom, we have another opportunity on March 19th when we will conclude our Health Choices education with a Celebration Night for the entire second grade and their parents from 6-7:30 pm

There will be committee members at the neighborhood meetings with sign-up sheets, so please bring your calendars to the meeting to reserve your spot!
