WHY JOIN THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF PORTLAND, MAINE?
Receive Excellent Training
Members are offered training courses, seminars and workshops on a variety of topics that relate to personal, professional and community interests. Opportunities to attend League sponsored state, regional and national conferences and training sessions are also available to members.
Better our Community through Community Service
For 85 years, the Junior League of Portland has committed volunteer leadership and funding to many worthwhile community projects. The JLP has strived to make a difference in our community by identifying specific needs and creating projects, frequently in conjunction with community partners, to meet those needs.
Network with Other Women who Share Your Values
Members working side by side, serving their community, form lasting friendships. Networking opportunities also exist through collaborations with other community, state and national organizations.
Develop Your Leadership Skills
Members develop core skills by serving on League committees that transfer well to their personal and professional lives. Many League members are afforded opportunities to serve on community boards, and other local/ national leadership programs. In addition, Members are encouraged to take leadership positions that provide for personal growth and are supported by a mentoring system.
Transfer Your Membership --Nationally or Internationally
League membership is transferable throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Mexico, thus providing members with a network in a new community.
Build Lasting Friendships
Strong bonds of friendship develop while working on a League project, participating in training, working together to help others, attending membership meetings and social events.

New Member
New Members are those women who are engaged in training established
by the Junior League to prepare them for effective community and League involvement.
Before becoming an Active JLP member, New Members attend trainings, participate
in General Membership and committee meetings, and plan and implement a Done-In-A-Day (DIAD)
project to improve the Greater Portland community.
Active
Active members have successfully completed a New Member year of service in the JLP.
Members are required to pay annual dues, financially support any
JLP project or fundraiser, fulfill their placement in a committee, and
complete at least eighteen volunteer hours (these hours can be split between hours within
the JLP and those completed in external projects, such as schools or other community
organizations). Active members are offered special training opportunities to better
enable them to serve the community.
Active Gold Active Gold members have been
active in the Junior League for 6 or more years. But
instead of becoming a Sustainer, a member may choose to continue
to have a more active status. Financial and
Education/Training requirements are the same as an Active
member, but Active Gold members have the option of one
of the following: fulfill committee placement, fulfill internal
volunteer hours on a JLP community project, fulfill internal
volunteer hours on a JLP fundraiser, fulfill external volunteer
hours, serve as a Board member on an external committee, provide
education for a JLP training, or serve on the JLP Nominating
committee.
Sustainer
After 6 years of Active membership, a member can become a Sustainer. Sustainers
have a reduced financial requirement and are encouraged and welcome to attend
all meetings, fundraisers, seminars, and community projects.
Transfer
Current, Active, and Sustaining members may transfer membership
from one Junior League to another.
Any member who transfers to another Junior League will
be granted the same membership status in the receiving Junior League.
Written notice to the Corresponding Secretary and Board approval of transfer is required.
Inter-League
Active and Sustaining members, who will be residing temporarily in the area of
another Junior League, may be granted the inter-league
privilege for a period for no more than one year. The sending Junior League may extend
the period for one additional year.
A member granted the inter-league privilege will comply with the requirements of the
receiving Junior League, and will be entitled to all privileges of membership, as
determined by the receiving Junior League. The member will be listed as a member of
and pay dues to the sending Junior League, which shall have final responsibility for
her in all matters.
Written notice to the JLP Corresponding Secretary and Board approval of Inter-League
status is required.
Non-Resident
Active and Sustaining members, who are living at a distance from the JLP,
may be granted the non-resident privilege. Non-resident Active
and Sustaining members who live in an area in which there is no Junior League may
retain that privilege indefinitely.
Non-resident members may not vote nor hold office.
Payment of annual dues must be made by April 15. Dues received after May 15 will
result in an additional $20 late fee.
