Meet a Member is a regular  feature that tells the League's story through the words of our wonderful members!

Meet Ashlen Snellen

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

I moved to Portland from New York City in March. I completed my provisional year in NY and loved it so much I knew I had to transfer to the Portland chapter ASAP. It was actually the first thing I did before I even signed a new apartment lease. Coming into a new city knowing no one, I knew joining the Junior League of Portland would be the best way to get to know amazing women in the community and make new friends while serving Portland all at the same time!

Tell us a bit about yourself; how do you spend your days? What field do you work in? What are your hobbies?

I am a fashionista turned real estate sales agent with RE/MAX by the bay. When I’m not selling homes you can find me riding my baby blue Vespa to the beach, reading real estate books, in a pilates studio, playing basketball, cooking, or rearranging the furniture in my apartment.

Where is the one place in the world you would like to visit?

Portugal. I hear it’s beautiful there.

What or who are the people who have inspired you?

Different people inspire me in different ways. I am inspired by Ivanka Trump’s ruthless attitude in real estate. I am inspired by Rachel Zoe’s style and fashion. I am inspired by the grace and class of American women icons. But most of all, my Mom has inspired me to be the independent strong-willed woman that I am today.

Dynamic!

What is on your life “bucket list”?

Lean to surf, scuba and sail & travel. travel. travel.

What would you like to say to women considering membership in the Junior League of Portland?

It is the best decision you will make out of college (apart from your husband). It will not only help you to make close friends, network within your community, empower you to succeed, but will also give you the opportunity to give back and volunteer. I don’t know of any other organization that combines all of those things into one. The Junior League is very unique and special group of women. It is not just an organization you are a part of, it is a part of who you become and given the values of the organization, every woman should join.

Meet Ellen Berg

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

I joined the Junior League eight years ago as a way to volunteer in my community while meeting new people.

Tell us a bit about yourself; how do you spend your days? What field do you work in? What are your hobbies?

This is my fourth year as a pre-k teacher and I have loved every minute of it!  My favorite part of my job is working on creative art projects, teaching kids to read, and that moment when a kid realizes he/she can do something.

Some of my hobbies include running (I’m running my first marathon on October 27th in Washington DC!), doing anything artistic, going to the beach in the summer and snowshoeing with my husband in the winter.

Where is the one place in the world you would like to visit?

I would love to go to Italy.  I want to see all the famous paintings and sculptures of the artists that have inspired me and of course, eat my weight in pasta…

What or who are the people who have inspired you?
My husband is a big inspiration to me.  He truly lives each day like it might be his last and he encourages me to do the same; something I probably wouldn’t push myself to do if I had married someone exactly like me.

Finish the sentence: “One word to describe me is: ___________.”

polka-dotted!

What is on your life “bucket list”?

  1. Eat pizza in Italy
  2. Run a marathon (happening in October)
  3. Learn to surf in Hawaii (happening in February)
  4. Be President of the Junior League of Portland
  5. See the seven wonders of the world
  6. Paint a huge public mural

What would you like to say to women considering membership in the Junior League of Portland?

In my experience, women join the Junior League for one or a combination of three reasons: 1) to volunteer in their community 2) to meet people and/or 3) to network.  What they may not realize initially, is that the experiences you gain and the people you meet through this organization will help you to accomplish all three.

Meet Vicki Kennedy

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?
I joined the JLP because I wanted to volunteer, get involved and help our community.

Tell us a bit about yourself; how do you spend your days? What field do you work in? What are your hobbies?
I have been a Realtor for over 15 years. I opened my own real estate firm, RE/MAX Oceanside  in 2006. I really love being a Realtor, but my first passion is my family! I enjoy relaxing at the lake, traveling and spending time with them.

Where is the one place in the world you would like to visit?
Greece. It's where my family on my father's side came from

What or who are the people who have inspired you?
My husband, Jeff: he's the most patient, giving and generous person I know
My son, Kyle for his drive and determination
My daughter, Kelsey who reminds me daily how important fun and laughter are in our lives

Finish the sentence: “One word to describe me is: __________________”
Wow, that's a tough one!! I guess one word to describe me is 'perfectionist'. I can't help it, I will do something over and over again to get it just right!

What is on your life “bucket list”?
One item on my bucket list is to travel extensively

What would you like to say to women considering membership in the Junior League of Portland?
Give it a try, don't over think it...just jump in and do it! My involvement in the JLP has been one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences I've had. I've met some of my closest, best friends and made lots of new connections. I've volunteered hundreds of hours cooking meals, creating playgrounds, selling cookbooks, mentoring, and volunteering my time to the girls at Long Creek, Kids First Center, Children's Museum and the Center for Grieving Children to name just a few.

Meet Lisa Fraley

How do you spend your days? What field do you work in?
By training, I am an attorney who works in the area of major gifts and planned giving for Saint Joseph's College. Over a decade ago (yes, I am that old!), I had been working in a large law firm in Columbus, Ohio and was growing tired of the long hours, so I worked with a life coach and decided to make a job change. A friend of mine from the Junior League of Columbus (of course!) connected me to the United Way in Columbus and from there I worked in non-profit fundraising for United Way in both Ohio and Maine, and now for SJC.

But, my secret side passion is that I am a Life Coach & a Health Coach. I became a life coach back in 2003 through CoachU and a holistic health and nutrition coach in 2012 through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I now have a business called Maine Healthy Life Coach LLC where I work one-on-one with women to have the life and body they have always dreamed of - and I love it!

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?
I joined the Junior League of Columbus (OH) back in 1997 because I was new to the area and my grandmother had been a member of that Junior League. When I moved to Columbus after law school, my grandfather suggested that I join the JL to meet people and get connected to the community. I had served on the Board a number of times in the JLC and met many good friends, and I was eligible to go Sustaining when I moved to Maine. But Elliott Pitts and Lynn Weisz both encouraged me to transfer in to the JLP as an Active - and I am so glad that I did! I have met some of my closest friends in the JLP, and this League has such a warm and welcoming vibe.

After just a year or so, I was nominated to serve on the Board and then honored to serve as the JLP President from 2009-10. I did finally go Sustaining and this year I have served as the Sustainer Co-Director on the Board.

What has been your favorite placement since you joined the League?
Serving as the President certainly was truly life-changing. (I strongly encourage anyone considering it to do jump in with both feet!) But, the role that I really loved was serving as the New Member Co-Chair because there is nothing more inspiring than introducing a new group of women to such an incredible women's organization that has been such a big part of my life for the past 16 years.

What inspires you? or Who are the people who have inspired you?
All of the people who inspire me have the same characteristic: courage. I always admire people who are willing to step out of their comfort zone, stretch themselves, and take a risk. It is so easy to just "stay safe" and do what is comfortable, but what is so fantastic about the JLP is that you can experience so many leadership opportunities that allow you to do something new, enhance your leadership skills, and branch out. Life is short - so dig deep, find your courage, get support, and share your gifts with the JLP! The organization needs your energy and talent - dive in!

Dog or cat?
Both, actually. I grew up with dogs, but I have a cat, Mia, now. I always say I am a "dog AND cat person"!

Meet Paula Birmingham

Paula says: "This photo was taken by my nephew and JLP member Julie Lannon-Contreras's son, Colin.  We had a blast that day recording his brother’s soccer game and taking goofy photos!"

How do you spend your days? What field do you work in?

I am a personal finance junkie.  I work with individuals to remove fear and confusion related to their finances.

If you could do anything else, what would it be?

A videographer.  (A good one of course :). And help more people with their finances.

What is your favorite Maine attraction?

Anything outdoors.

Dog or cat?

Cat. Someday we will have a dog.

Who in the League do you look up to?

Lisa Fraley, Tina Jenkins & Denise Morrison.  Thank you all for your encouragement this year!

Meet Hope Bramhall (mother) and Betsy Twombly (daughter)

Hope Bramhall

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

Reputation, and I thought it would be a wonderful way to learn more about the Greater Portland community since, as an "Army Brat”, I was a relative newcomer to Portland.  Knowing some JLP members, whom I greatly admired and highly respected, I felt honored to be asked! Back in 1959 to become a member, one had to have both a sponsor and seconder!

How has your membership in the Junior League impacted your life?

Immeasurably!  Before joining the League, the thought of speaking before a group of people was terrifying!  Through participation, I learned confidence, received encouragement and found that experience helps to drive involvement!  Without the Junior League, I would never have had the confidence to become President of 5 organizations, represent one on the National level, and chair countless committees along the way!  I feel truly blessed and attribute any and all success that I have had to my Junior League training!!! I has made me a different person for which I shall be eternally grateful!

What would you like to say to women considering membership in the Junior League of Portland?

It's the best thing you can do for yourself and your community!  Also, as an International Organization, your membership opens doors to a new community like no other and brings new friendships as well as opportunities!

What or who inspires you?

The training aspect of the League is without comparison! Association with "like minded", talented, inspired women breeds inspiration!  So many people/ friends have inspired me - Louise James, who is no longer alive, was an incredible "role model" and friend!  She was a lovely lady, soft spoken, wise, and very involved and respected in the Greater Portland community.  I am proud to have proposed Sally Vamvakias for membership and she has been a great inspiration to all who know her.  Bettsanne Holmes, the first FEMALE Chair of the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees, and dear friend, has inspired many "as a trail blazer" paving the way for women to participate in many areas previously dominated by men!  And the list goes on!  When I first joined the League, the President of every organization in Portland, was a JLP member!  That speaks volumes!!!

How do you spend your days? What field do you work in?

My days, at age 78, are still very full!  I work out for an hour and 15 minutes three times a week.  I paint (watercolor) every Tuesday afternoon from 12:30 to 4PM. On the Volunteer Front, my main thrust has always been in the Social Services!  I chair the Patient Care Survey Team at MMC and conduct interviews about how they perceive their care, every Thursday and conduct a monthly meeting with the Director of Nursing when each team member gives her nursing reports (each  member is assigned to a different unit of the hospital, so we cover all aspects of the hospital.  I am a 27-year member of the MMC Board of Corporators and 53yr. volunteer at MMC.  I chair the Decorating Committee of the Portland Yacht Club where my committee and I have been overseeing/making recommendations to the PYC Board ever since we did a major reconstruction in 1998.  I work for the Colby College Admissions Department, conducting interviews of students who want an "extra endorsement"!  Travel, sporting events cross country skiing and visiting away grandchildren occupy a lot of our "leisure time"!

If you could do anything else, what would it be?
Continue to stay active and involved and am always open to anything on the volunteer front that might entice me and fit into an already pretty crowded schedule!

What is your favorite Maine attraction?

The Coast of Maine ( for 50 years we spent our summers cruising the beautiful coast) and the Botanical Garden in Boothbay, a great destination with summer visitors!

Dog or cat?

My husband is allergic to both so I have to enjoy those belonging to others. Daughter, Betsy, had three beautiful Golden Retrievers over the years and as a matter of fact, we had 9 "grand-puppies" before Betsy gave us our first beautiful granddaughter!

What’s your favorite book or magazine?

I like mysteries by Tess Gerritson and Dan Brown! My two favorite magazines are "Down East" and "Coastal Living".

What is on your life “bucket list”?

"Use it or lose it " and I intend to use it and keep active, engaged and loving life!

Betsy Twombly

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?
To meet/network with women  within the JLP and to connect with our community.

How has your membership in the Junior League impacted your life?

By giving back to others and helping/educating those in need.

What would you like to say to women considering membership in the Junior League of Portland?

Just do it!  You won't regret it.

What or who inspired you?

Can-do attitudes.  My mother Hope Bramhall is an inspiration to me, she always thinks of others first and set the example for her 4 daughters to follow. Also, Katie Shisler (Michael) who was president during my provisional (new member) year, I remember how "awestruck" I was with her poise, demeanor, and can-do attitude.  She set the standard/tone for others to follow.  I will never forget her great leadership and impact on my first year as a provisional!

How do you spend your days? What field do you work in?

I begin my day with a quick work out at the gym, I love the social aspect of going to the gym, it gets me motivated!  I don't drink coffee, so this is my caffeine substitute!  I work full time at RE/MAX By The Bay, on the David Banks Team which is quite similar to my previous profession in retail at Filene's for 22 years.  The Real Estate profession is a very fast faced, high energy position which I thrive on….I am married and have two daughters who are currently at Colby College (a Senior and Freshman) and usually find myself sending them a text during the day to keep in touch!

If you could do anything else, what would it be?

I love what I am doing now, and the fact that I don't have to work weekends!

What is your favorite Maine attraction?

The Maine Coast in the summer and Sugarloaf in the winter….living in Maine is the best of both worlds!

Dog or cat?

Golden Retriever, I have had three over the past 26 years…all wonderful, fun loving dogs!

What’s your favorite book or magazine?

Maine Magazine and InStyle.  Books are a challenge for me, as I can't sit still long enough to finish them…..I am always on the go!

What is on your life “bucket list”?

I would love to go to Fiji…..

Meet Jenika Scott

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

I was headed down a career path and felt like it was time to start rooting out into the community. The Junior League was a perfect fit for that as well as filled the need to be a part of a network of amazing women peers and role models.

How do you spend your days? What field do you work in?

I work in the Internet Marketing inudstry at Page One Web Solutions in the Old Port. My job is mainly to help our clients become more visible online through SEO, Paid Search, Blogging, and Social Media.

If you could do anything else, what would it be?

I would want to be a professional dog trainer - either just to teach them to be good citizens or for television.

What is your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas is my favorite holiday because there is so much excitement, love, beauty, and enchantment all around - I wish it could feel like that all year round.

What is your favorite Maine attraction?

Weld, Maine, specifically Webb Lake is, in my own opinion, the most gorgeous place on earth (well, summer time at least). It's my own little slice of heaven. I recommend anyone that likes to hike to climb Tumbledown Mountain to see it for themself.

Meet Samantha Sawyer

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

I had just moved to Maine last September and was looking to get more involved in my community and also meet some new friends as well!

If you could do anything else, what would it be?

I would love to open a boutique in the Old Port that would be a combination of fabulous clothes, shoes and jewelry along with home decor as well. It would be dog friendly and I could bring my two black labs with me to work daily and they would love to greet customers and lounge on the furniture!

What is your favorite Maine attraction?

Not really a Maine Attraction, but I love low tide at Bayview Beach in Saco, ME. Its my favorite place to go with my husband and dogs to enjoy a glass of wine, or to watch the sun rise over the ocean as my dogs run around chasing the seagulls!

Dog or cat?

Dog! I have two adorable black labs Jack and Charlie who are spoiled rotten! I am involved in animal rescues and had fostered three dogs, until we fostered Charlie who became a forever puppy in August 2009.

What would you like to say to women considering membership in the Junior League of Portland?

DO IT, I had thought about joining the Junior League when I lived in Boston and when I moved to Maine I decided to finally do it. There are so many fantastic women in the league and it's great for networking, meeting new friends and getting involved in your community.

Meet Beth Peterson

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

I joined the Junior League in order to meet new people and I really wanted to start volunteering in my new community, as my husband and I had just bought a house and were putting down roots.

What’s your favorite book or magazine?

I have a few all time favorite books: The Chosen and Memoirs of a Geisha.

How do you spend your days? What field do you work in?

I work at a law firm as the Office Manager and a paralegal. I do everything from trial preparation and meeting with clients to meeting with vendors and being in charge of the firm financials. I am also the office handy woman - I've put together a lot of the chairs and furniture. Outside of the office I enjoy spending time with my husband and dog. I'm often reading or partaking in my always enjoyable hobby of exploring wineries and doing some wine tasting.

What is on your life “bucket list”?

So far, my "bucket list" just involves traveling. Domestically I'd love to spend a week in NYC just walking around the city, exploring the spots the locals love. I also hope to do some wine tasting in the Finger Lakes, explore California and relax in Hawaii. Internationally I'd love to go to Italy, France, Sweden and Australia, just to name a few places.

How has your membership in the Junior League impacted your life?

Being a member of the Junior League has given me a group that I am proud to say I am a part of and has introduced me to people I wouldn't have met otherwise. I am able to appreciate the impact I am making in my community and know that I am actively working to make it better. I have learned a lot of the history of different organizations in Portland just because of the work the League has done with them.

Meet Allison Campbell

Why did you join the Junior League of Portland, Maine?

I moved to Portland from Washington DC last August (2011). I would have never even thought about joining the league on my own however another member made the suggestion and I immediately looked into it. I am so happy I joined. Not only have I met an amazing group of women, I am proud to say a lot of them are now my very good friends after only one year. I look forward to the new people I meet this year and the relationships that trasnpire not only for me but for all of our members.

What inspires you? or Who are the people who have inspired you?

Hard work and determination inspire me. I get my incredibly hard work ethic from my parents. They both worked very hard and sacrificed so much to get where they are now in order to provide for me and my siblings what their parents were unable to offer them. I am forever grateful to my parents.

If you could do anything else, what would it be?

Personal Shopper or Professional Closet Organizer or both!

What is your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas. I am an extremely proud member of a very larger Irish Catholic family. I am the oldest of 21 grandchildren. Everyone travels to Grandma & Grandpa's (GMA & GPA's) in Breezy Point New York on Christmas Day to celebrate. We exchange gifts, play games, say what we are thankful for and eat A LOT!
