Annual Event
The sixth annual Freeze Out Hunger gala celebration, sponsored by Maine Magazine, was held at the Westin Portland Harborview Hotel, with our special guest and emcee WGME 13's broadcast personality, Kim Block. The Freeze Out Hunger gala featured a masquerade theme, an evening full of music, dance, silent auctions and hors d’oeuvres.
All proceeds from the event, will support the organization's charitable purposes, which include promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
When asked about this years Freeze Out Hunger Gala our President, Sandy Couch-Kelly had the following to say:“What makes the Junior League of Portland so unique is that its investment in the community is two-fold. The Junior League actively trains its members to become effective volunteers and community leaders while simultaneously executing community projects tied its community issue area.
In 2009, the Junior League of Portland, ME adopted hunger and food insecurity as its issue area and hosted its first annual Freeze Out Hunger gala, at which point Maine ranked 9th in the nation and first in New England in terms of food insecurity.
In partnership with the Good Shepherd Food Bank, the Junior League launched the BackPack Program in 2010 to provide food insecure children with easy-to-prepare meals during weekends and school vacations. Since it's launch, the program has impacted the lives of over 1,000 children in Maine.
In spring 2013, the Junior League of Portland completed it’s long-term project with the Good Shepherd Food Bank, beginning the transition process toward adopting a new community issue area. It has dedicated the past year to providing volunteer support to several community organizations addressing hunger and food insecurity in southern Maine while also investigating the emerging needs in the greater Portland community.
This year, the Junior League adopted the masquerade theme for its annual gala celebration as we move towards unmasking our new charitable focus area within a year.”
